CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Ainslie sang along with the radio on her way to work. For her to be singing at 6:00 a.m. was almost an indication that some apocalypse was upon them, but Ainslie refused to worry—the morning had gone too well. From any other man, she wouldn’t have accepted daft lines that sounded like bad come-ons. “Best six minutes of my trip.” Aye right—Ewan Portman went from smooth to silly with the ease of a show horse changing gaits.

And God help her heart, he was better looking than Sam Heughan and Sean Connery combined. It was a bit of luxury to have let go and be allowing herself to drool over a pretty face. Her mother had always said, “If you stop looking, you’re dead.” Maybe it had been too long since she’d looked. She’d grieved over her past mistakes long enough, and she didn’t have to tell Ewan anything about those mistakes. He could leave when his time was done and remember her as a friend willing to be joyful and not closed off to fun. And when he was gone, maybe she’d have moved forward an inch with her life.

She entered her tiny storefront surgery and turned on the lights, taking in the tidy waiting lobby and check-in desk. Everything was in order, and she moved to the back where she had one exam table, four kennels lined against a side wall, another wall of locked cabinets that contained her supplies and drugs, and a closet that held the few pieces of expensive diagnostic equipment she possessed—a portable x-ray machine, an ultrasound, a shockwave machine, and an ancient endoscope that needed replacing.

The x-ray and ultrasound she’d bought along with her used truck right after graduating, and she was still paying those off. The surgery she’d inherited from the elderly veterinarian who’d hired her and passed away a year later. Ainslie still missed the feisty Fiona MacNichols, who’d mentored her with a firm hand and a kind heart. Without her, Ainslie never would have started out with as many clients, much less a place in which to see them.

By 8:00 a.m., she’d seen two cats and a pet rabbit, brought in by dads who had to be to work early. They were followed by a large mastiff with spring allergies and a blue heeler who’d stepped on a staple gun staple. Not until nine did she have a break long enough to allow the phone call she’d planned all night to make. If Dr. MacNichols had been her first godsend, the staff at Victoria Veterinary Services in Fort William was her second. The six vets on staff were all willing to help her in a pinch, and the senior vets were generous with their expertise. She hoped asking them for four days’ worth of help wouldn’t strain their kindness.

“Hiya, Laurie,” she said when Victoria’s receptionist answered. “It’s Ainslie again.”

“Oh hullo, Ainslie! Such a nice voice to hear on a windy Wednesday morning. Far better than the client who just blamed me for the cold.
